About BCGA Awards & Scholarships

The BCGA Bursaries are made possible thanks to generous directed contributions from a few BCGA members and in partnership with the BC Aviation Council. All applications are reviewed by a BCGA panel and the awards are presented at the BC Aviation Council's annual Silver Wings Awards Gala.

FAQ

Q: Can I nominate myself?
A: Yes, you can nominate yourself or anybody else that you feel may be deserving as long as you are a BCGA member.

Q: Do I need to be a student pilot?
A: No, the BCGA bursaries are available to any pilot or engineer that wishes to further their training or become recurrent in an effort to improve proficiency and safety. 

Q: Are scholarships and bursaries just for young people?
A: Absolutely not! BCGA Bursaries are available to any member of the community that meet the requirements of the bursary being applied for. 

Q: I am not planning to pursue a career in Aviation can I still apply?
A: Yes, the BCGA awards are not exclusively for those that are planning to fly commercially. 

Q: I applied for a BCGA bursary in previous years but was not selected. Can I apply again?
A: Yes, please do!

BCGA Awards & Scholarships

Erissa Yong Memorial BCGA Bursary  $2000 (1954 ~ 2020)

Awarded to a pilot or student pilot who has overcome adversity in his or her life.

Purpose
This award is to recognize the perseverance of a pilot, student pilot or aircraft maintenance engineer that has overcome adversity. The scholarship is to be used to further the recipients aviation education or flight training towards basic or advanced licenses or ratings.

Basic Criteria:
-Nominated by a BCGA member. Or any BCGA member may nominate themselves.  Additional consideration will be given to nominees that have been BC General Aviation Association members for at least one year prior to their nomination. Nominees should become BCGA members upon nomination (membership is free).

- Paragraph (200-400 words) written by the nominator about the nominee and why they deserve the bursary

- Short essay (500-1000 words) A statement from the nominee should also be included indicating why he/she should receive the award and outlining personal achievements, goals and what the bursary will be used for.

-In the case that the application is for flight training the nominee should have already completed at least 5 hours of flight instruction.

-In the case that the application is for aircraft maintenance training, the nominee should have already completed at least one semester of post secondary aircraft maintenance training.

Dispersion Of Funds
To be paid directly to a training unit / school.

Onkarbir Singh Toor Memorial BCGA Scholarship $1000

Awarded to a pilot or student pilot who has overcome adversity in his or her life. 

Purpose
This award is to recognize the perseverance of a pilot or student pilot that has overcome adversity. The scholarship is to be used to further the recipients aviation education or flight training towards basic or advanced licenses or ratings.

Basic Criteria:
-Nominated by a BCGA member. Or any BCGA member may nominate themselves.  Additional consideration will be given to nominees that have been BC General Aviation Association members for at least one year prior to their nomination. Nominees should become BCGA members upon nomination (membership is free).

- Paragraph (200 - 400 words) written by the nominator about the nominee and why they deserve the bursary

- Short essay (500 - 1000 words) A statement from the nominee explaining how they overcame adversity in life. 

- The nominee shall have completed at a minimum their first solo flight.

To be paid directly to a training unit / school.

(Note: The person making the nomination must be a BCGA Member)
Submit your nomination or any questions to info@bcaviation.ca. In the subject line insert the name of the award being applied for.
In the body of the email please include or attach:
1. Nominator's Name, Address, Telephone Number, Email Address
2. Nominee's Name, Address, Telephone Number, Email Address
​3. Nominator's paragraph as outlined in Basic Criteria (Not required if nominating yourself)
4. Nominee's short essay as outloined in Basic Criteria
