The BC General Aviation Association is proud to announce that effective July 1, 2023 ADS-B in/out transponders will be mandatory in all general aviation aircraft operating in Southern Domestic Airspace. We believe that this change is a step in the right direction towards enhancing aviation safety. The BCGA always puts the best interests of its members first which is why we took the lead in working with Transport Canada and our air navigation service providers to ensure that our nation's aircraft transponder requirements surpass even those of the FAA's 2020 ADS-B mandate.

In an effort to be fair to all Canadians we tried to have the new ADS-B requirements include Northern Domestic Airspace as well but Transport Canada's office in Iqaluit felt that such a requirement would be unfair and cause undue expense for pilots in the north citing that those that reside in the cities underlying Southern Domestic Airspace have it too easy as it is.

Why would BCGA endorse such an unnecessary burden on general aviation? I for one am dead against it, and I demand to know on what basis the BCGA used the numbers on their membership to endorse such an expensive, general aviation crippling policy without canvassing their members. It seems to be a unilateral personal sentiment from an out-of-touch leadership.

We should all move to Iqaluit, the last bastion of common sense and practicality.

Ok, just saw the date of this, April 1, April Fool joke on me. Next time I'll tell you what I really think 😠

I've spent a fair bit of time in Iqaluit. It's damn cold there :-)

Safety for not only GA aircraft but also commercial is paramount. The world is changing and I, for one, welcome this new technology to make the skies safer, particularly around the cities.
