Fort Langley CBQ2 Frequency Change Initiative - Update

1/17/2017

Update - The frequency change for Fort Langley has been approved. Effective March 2nd 2017 the ATF at Fort Langley (CBQ2) will be within 2nm and 1500' ASL and the new frequency will be 122.72.

This change will align Fort Langley's frequency with the frequency already used in the neighboring Glen Valley practice area making the airspace safer for all pilots.

This initiative was spearheaded by the BCGA on the suggestion of member and pilot Daniel Adair.

Fort Langley airport is a private airport located in the Fraser Valley. It is situated along the Fraser River and is home to float planes, private aircraft and even a Cessna Citation and Pilatus PC12.

The airport's location puts it in the precarious position of being squished between the Pitt Meadows Control Zone, the Langley Control Zone and the Glenn Valley Practice Area.

As many of you know, the Glenn Valley Practice area is an extremely busy piece of airspace.
All aircraft working in the area make position broadcasts on 122.72 as published on the VFR maps.

Some BCGA members and authorized users of the private Fort Langley Airport have expressed serious concerns as aircraft working in the Glenn Valley Practice area routinely fly over the Fort Langley Airport at altitudes of less than 2000' without making broadcasts on the published Fort Langley Frequency (123.2).

In light of these safety concerns,  The BC General Aviation Association has worked with the owner of the Fort Langley Airport, Its users, Nav Canada and Transport Canada to have the Fort Langley Airport ATF frequency changed from 123.2 to 122.72. This change ensures that Fort Langley and Glenn Valley pilots are all on a common frequency and should reduce the risks of pilots flying over the airport without being on frequency.

So far the change has been approved by all interested agencies and we are awaiting word on when the change will be published. While it will most likely not be reflected on the next edition of the VTA it should be included in the next CFS Publication.

Until the change is published please make the appropriate calls on the Fort Langley Airport frequency 123.2.

As an association we are listening to your concerns. This is just one example of how we can work together to create change and ensure safe and enjoyable flying in BC.

Special thanks to:
Aiden Kyne (Nav Canada)
Dan Martens (Transport Canada)

BCGA & PrepAIR

The BC General Aviation Association is proud to be partnering with PrepAIR.  We will be working with PrepAIR to engage British Columbia's pilots in promoting what has become a very successful and resource rich flight safety seminar series.  The BCGA's mission is to promote safe and enjoyable flying throughout British Columbia. By partaking in a PrepAIR seminar, you will be doing your part to be as well prepared and as informed as possible which helps make us all safer and flying more enjoyable.

About PrepAIR

PrepAIR was created in 2015 by Darlene George, manager of YYJ Tower and YWH Flight Service Station, and Simon Dennis, YYJ Tower air traffic controller. Representing NAV CANADA, and wanting to do something in its name to engage the local aviation community in a way that had never been done before, they proudly used the support, resources and reputation of their company to inspire PrepAIR's creation. It is a new direction for NAV CANADA.

PrepAIR is driven by the knowledge that in aviation, every user is uniquely connected and a part of the same picture, often more than we realize. From controllers, to airport authorities, to pilots, to everyone in-between, opportunities to interact with each other and understand the role we respectively play are limited at best. We intend to change that. PrepAIR is created for you, the pilot, but it is much more than just a refresher of pilot information. It is a call to come together, to provide you with new points of view, to meet and communicate with those that you normally wouldn't have the chance to, conducted in a welcoming atmosphere that will not only increase your knowledge, but leave us all with a greater sense that we are a part of broad and inherently connected community.
