BCGA Launches the Private Airstrip Access Program

We are proud to announce the launch of the BC General Aviation Private Airstrip Access Program (PAAP). The basis of the program is to get private airstrips that had been previously closed to public access opened up for us to enjoy.

There has been a lot of work put into this project by many Airstrip Owners, BCGA members and also by the legal firm of Chris Knight LLC. The basis of this program is that the airstrip owners sign up to participate based on the knowledge that they cannot be sued.

Pilots and passengers sign a waiver that prevents them from suing the airstrip owner no matter what happens. This allows pilots access to ALL the strips listed in the program as long as the conditions outlined by the airstrip owner/operator are met.

In many cases PPR is still required but in the past you were always denied due to liability concerns and now you will usually be allowed to use the airstrip. We only have a few airstrips listed at this time but we are talking to many airstrip owners and hope to have them onboard shortly.

The airstrips that are part of our launch announcement are:
-Clearwater
-Echo Valley Ranch
-Cortes Island
-Sidney Island

If you know of any airstrips that you would like us to try and get in the program send us a note.

All BCGA members will have access to the PAAP webpage on the BCGA website using their login credentials. The Private Airstrip Access Program page is located in the MEMBERS dropdown menu.

Fly Safe and Have Fun!
Ken Wardstrom,
BCGA Director.

New Flying Award to encourage women of all ages to fly!
A one-time $500 Award is now available for 2018.

The British Columbia Coast Chapter 99s are remembering Jean Prior with a one-time Award of $500, available to a woman pilot in Western Canada to help her continue in her aviation career, hobby, or education. Application deadline is July 31st, 2018.

Jean Prior was a lively, positive, and generous member of the BC Coast Chapter Ninety-Nines, and well loved by all. She flew her Cessna 150 with great pride. She encouraged women of all ages to learn to fly, and encouraged new pilots to enjoy flying as often as possible.

Therefore, preference will be given to a low-time Private Pilot to help her build time and experience.

This one-time award is in addition to our annual West Canada Section 99s scholarship of $1500. Eligibility criteria are the same, so only one application is necessary. The winner will be selected from that pool of applicants.

Learn more about the Jean Prior Award, the West Canada Section scholarship, and many more at this link: https://bccoast99s.com/scholarships/

The BC Coast Chapter 99s welcomes and encourages all women pilots and student pilots to join our chapter, meeting each month at YPK Pitt Meadows Airport. The Ninety-Nines is the International Organization of Women Pilots that promotes advancement of aviation through education, scholarships, and mutual support while honouring our unique history and sharing our passion for flight.

Arthur Loring Appointed BCGA's Okanagan Director

We are pleased to announce that Arthur Loring has been appointed by the BCGA Board of Directors as the new Director for the Okanagan. Arthur recently ran in the COPA director election and was the runner up to David Black and outgoing BCGA Okanagan Director Dave McElroy.

Arthur is an active and enthusiastic member of the flying community and despite being relatively new to the world of aviation has already become a well known pilot in Kamloops and is promoting and bringing new energy to General Aviation in the Okanagan. Arthur owns and operates a Diamond DA20 and is the Vice President of the Kamloops Flying Club.

Arthur will tell you that the BCGA played a role in his decision to take the leap into aircraft ownership as he saw that there was an active community of aviators in the Province which motivated him to take his flying to the next level.

The appointment of Arthur Loring came on the suggestion of Dave McElroy who was elected as the BCGA Okanagan Director at the 2017 AGM. Dave recently completed his Give Hope Wings flight around the Americas and raised over $500,000 for Hope Air. As the current President of the Kelowna Flying Club and recently elected BC/YT COPA Director, Dave felt that the BCGA Okanagan Director position would be better served by an enthusiastic, motivated and up and coming leader in the community and specifically suggested that Arthur fill this role. The BCGA Board thanks Dave for his service and for putting the community first. We look forward to continuing to work with Dave in his new role with COPA and as an active BCGA member.

Arthur's appointment is an exciting development for the BCGA. We known that Arthur will work hard for the community both on a local and provincial level and we look forward to hearing about and implementing Arthur's ideas and initiatives.

The BCGA would like to congratulate Dave McElroy and David Black on their new positions as BC / Yukon COPA directors. We Ould also like to congratulate all the other candidates for volunteering your time to run in the election. We know that regardless of the results we would have been well represented by any combination of candidates. We look forward to a continued close relationship with COPA moving forward as we work together to achieve our common goals of promoting and furthering General Aviation.

ELECTION RESULTS

Voting for the 2018 Board of Directors elections concluded on Monday, April 2, 2018. We are pleased to announce the results to our membership and we congratulate each candidate for putting their name forward for consideration. Without the willingness of our members to take an active role in volunteering for our organization, COPA would not be able to continue our important work for general aviation in Canada. We hope that those candidates not successful this year will continue to remain actively involved in the organization through the many opportunities available.

We would also like to thank the members for turning out in record numbers to vote in this year’s elections. Overall turnout was 31.14% of eligible voters, the highest ever in our organization’s 66 year history. Regionally, turnout was 31.14% in BC and Yukon, 38.35% in Southern Ontario, and 16.87% in Quebec.

The ballots, both online and paper, were counted and the results certified at the COPA office by a team of member-scrutineers on Wednesday, April 4. We would like to thank them for their contribution to the process: Kevin Psutka, Earle dePass, and Claude Roy.
The winning candidates will begin their four-year terms upon ratification of the results by the members at the Association’s Annual General Meeting in June.

Congratulations to the winning candidates:
British Columbia and Yukon (2 positions):
DAVID BLACK: 207, 25.46%
DAVID McELROY: 166, 20.41%
ARTHUR LORING: 123, 15.12%
PETER LYTHALL: 121, 14.88%
KENNETH WELTE: 85, 10.45%
MARC R.B. WHITTEMORE: 70, 8.61%
PAT COCHRANE: 41, 5.04%
