When Is The Next Big BCGA Fly-Out?

6/18/2016

One of the most common questions that we are asked is "When is the next big BCGA Fly-Out?"

There is no easy answer to this question because every good weather day with or without an organized event is potentially a BCGA fly-out day.

What is a BCGA Flyout?
A BCGA flyout is anytime two or more BCGA members get together to fly somewhere. They can fly together or separately to the chosen destination. Sometimes it is nice just to fly with a few close friends and sometimes you might want to use tools like the BC General Aviation Facebook Page to broadcast your intentions in hopes that other members join in and or meet you there.

Just recently one member posted their intention to fly to Pemberton for lunch the evening before the flight and was met there by 10 other members. We call these impromptu fly-outs.

Who Can Organize a BCGA Fly-Out?
Fly-outs can be organized by any individual or club. All it takes is someone to invite others along to a destination. We encourage everyone to partake in organizing impromptu flyouts or flyouts with a little bit more notice. The BCGA is behind you 100% and will promote any aviation events or fly-outs with hopes that we can get people together doing what we all love most. As an organization we thrive on the initiative, excitement and motivation of our members.
Delta Heritage Airpark Fly-In July 2nd 2016
Every fly-in and aviation event in the province is important. This year we would like to make an extra effort to get as many BCGA members out to the Delta Heritage Airpark fly-in on July 2nd 2016 as possible. This is a very special location as it is one of the last remaining grass airstrips that we have left in relatively close proximity to the city. We have committed to support this event 100% and will have a display set up as well. We are currently working on some details but we hope to announce a special event/presentation that will happen at Delta Airpark Fly-in in the coming days.

The last "official" BCGA event at Texada/Gillies Bay in March saw over 40 aircraft in attendance we hope that you will join us in supporting the Delta Airpark Fly-in all in an effort to further General Aviation in BC. Not to mention, surpassing 40 BCGA aircraft in attendance would be pretty neat as well!

Flight Chops is coming to the West Coast!
Steve Thorne, host and creator of the popular YouTube channel Flight Chops is coming to town at the end of June/ Beginning of July.

He has reached out to the BCGA on Daniel Adair's recommendation to show him what aviation on the West Coast is all about. We plan on showing him a good time and welcoming him into our community.

Steve is looking for the quintessential West Coast aviation experience. We would love to hear any suggestions from you of what he should consider doing during his limited time out here.

Some things that we are already working on are:
1. R44 Flight in the moutains with Brad
2. DHC2 Beaver Flight with Peter Grimm from Vancity Seaplanes
3. Gravel Bar Hopping
4. Flight to Vargas Island
5. Delta Heritage Airpark Fly-In (July 2nd)

Please share some of your recommendations for Steve's trip so that we can send him home with an experience to remember!

Wings & Wheels 2016 Report

Tom, Keith and others had also improved the gate cross over area so much better than previous. I found another hole in the grass since so still needs some more work, but generally is much better. Also we leveled up the new band platform that Keith built. We had our best set-up ever for the 2016 Wings ‘n’ Wheels event. Steve and I worked through Friday on it in mostly good weather to rope off and shovel gravel. Used the pile that Gerry Crapo supplied and filled most of the holes and ruts in the grass area. A considerable improvement.

Sunday weather was even better than Friday’s. Sunny. Saturday, well not so much. It rained solid all day. Our brunch crew lead Bob Bryan along with Murray and Leanne adapted to Airshow mode using the meeting room for brunch with Courtney set at the corner.
Ken Wardstrom sent me this email Sunday and about sums up the event

----------------------

Hi Ed
I just want to say thanks to you and the AFC crew for
putting on a wonderful event. I know it rained and all that
stuff but it was still a great event with a fantastic brunch
and the chance to talk to old friends and meet new ones.
Joan and I had a great time.
Thanks again.
Ken&Joan Wardstrom
----------------------

We had quite a number of drive in guests from the airports around us including Langley, Boundry Bay and Chilliwack. So the inside program went well
Thank you to Bob Bryan and crew for the brunch, not just cooking but all the pot scrubbing and club house clean up. There were quite a number of members working both sides of the pass through window.

One thing we have to appreciate with this type of event, is how accommodating and adaptable our large clubhouse is. It really saved our event with everyone inside including Clark and the DC3. It went well especially with the live music.

Outside arrivals were slim. A black Corvette that was awarded Best Wheels was a man from Surrey. Turns out his wife had died that week and his friends were using our event to get him out of the house. Along with the Corvette, a collection of Japanese, German and British vehicles. Chris Palmer’s Land Rover and Chris Hibbert’s Jaguar.

Zero fly-in’s on the Wings side with solid IFR conditions. However Rene created a display on his own, with the Pacer squeezed between the trees, his black VW under wing one side and replica Porsche on the the other.

Rene received Best Wings for his aviation enthusiasm and contributions to the club. It occurred to me after that if he had brought out his pocket motorcycle that he could have filled all three classes. Devon Campbell with the KitFox, later in the day Chris with the Viking along with our two aircraft.
At 1PM there was $300 in fuel draws for participants, with Randy handling the draw. Steve spoke for the club then Mayor Braun for the City and making the engraved plaque Wings ‘n’ Wheels awards.
Our luck was the wettest day in an otherwise mostly dry May, possibly the wettest day of the year. That is the way it goes with dates. Considering the event we had in our clubhouse, some success.
Thanks to Heather on arrivals, Bob LeRoux air side and to all the members that helped.

BCGA Member Helps Locate Missing Aircraft

6/7/2016

On June 5th a Beechcraft Musketeer departed Pitt Meadows airport around 0930am for a flight to Pemberton and back with a planned arrival time back in Pitt Meadows of 1200pm. At 1930 the aircraft was reported missing.

The Rescue Coordination Centre in Victoria commenced a search utilizing both a DHC5 Buffalo and EH10 Cormorant helicopter. The Search lasted through the night and focused on the aircraft's last known position near Indian Arm.

Around 1500 on June 6th more than 24hrs after the aircraft went missing BCGA member Brandon Campbell was contacted by a friend that had been snowmobiling the day before just southwest of Whistler. Brandon's friend had noticed an aircraft at the base of a glacier and thought that it might be an old wreck. He noted that the aircraft was in good condition and there appeared to be no sign of human activity in the vicinity of the aircraft and took a photo thinking nothing of what he had just spotted and not knowing that there was an active search for the aircraft underway.

Brandon's friend sent him a photo of what he had seen and recognizing the aircraft as a possible Musketeer Brandon posted the photo the the BC General Aviation Facebook group and told his friend to meet him at the airport right away.

Brandon and his friend that took the photo took off in Brandon's Cessna 180 and headed to the location where the photo was taken. Meanwhile active members of the BC General Aviation Facebook Group grew excited and pleaded with Brandon to call the Rescue Coordination centre ASAP.

With darkness fast approaching, Brandon was not answering his phone. A few phone calls later we realized that he was flying. We contacted NavCanada and the JRCC to inform them that if they could track down CGPJA (Brandon's aircraft) that they might be able to get some good search info. We sent the photo to that Brandon had posted to the JRCC and this gave them significant hope that the people might still be alive.

The JRCC then called and advised us that the Search and Rescue Cormorant was in radio contact with Brandon and that he was leading them to the scene with the help of his friend that took the photo the day before.

The crash site was located a few miles Northwest of Callaghan Lake near the top of the North fork of the Squamish River. Search and Rescue technicians quickly descended on the scene to find a note from the pilot and passengers that they were following the river down the mountain. Armed with this information the Search and Rescue helicopter found them minutes later. The pilot and passengers were un injured and suffering from mild dehydration.

Thanks to the quick thinking and actions of Brandon, his friend that took the photo, the dedicated profeccionals at the Victoria Rescue Coordination Centre and the Search and Rescue Technicians at 442 Squardron in Comox the pilot and 2 passengers of the missing plane spent that night with their families in their own beds.
