Dear "Senior" Members,

We recently received this message from Patrick Gilligan, former VP of operations at the Canadian Owners and Pilots Association for 9 years. Please take a moment to review it and feel free to communicate with him as he would love to hear your feedback!
-----------------

From Patrick,

You’re getting older and you made decisions about your flying that will serve to keep you flying longer, e.g. step down from more complex aircraft… moved from IFR to only VFR, etc.,  and are you willing to tell you story to others to help them keep flying longer!

If this interests you, please do not hesitate to email: Patrick at dykaviation@gmail.com

Leave me a few details and a telephone number to reach you.

Pilots Asked To Help Track Whales In Coastal Waters

**Cetacean Spotting Guide Attached At Bottom Of Message**

Dear BCGA Members,

The BC Cetacean Sightings Network was established in 1999 in partnership with Ocean Wise and Fisheries and Oceans Canada.  So far, we have collected 103,000 reports of cetaceans and sea turtles from over 6,000 coastal residents.  Sightings data are not only used for conservation-based research within our own organization, but are also shared with government agencies, universities, and ENGOs for critical habitat analyses, the establishment of marine protected areas, environmental impact assessments, and more! Having coastal citizens act as our eyes on the water is helping us to better understand the abundance, distribution, and habitat use of BC’s threatened and endangered cetaceans.  Much of this data would not be recorded without volunteer observers-so the more participation in the program, the better.

We have created aerial cetacean ID guides to help with identification.  It is a small flipbook that contains the most commonly spotted cetacean species and what they look like when viewed from air. I’ve also contained some information about what to do if they spot a deceased whale.  There are a number of ways that pilots can report their sightings to us (via our WhaleReport app, through our webform at wildwhales.org, by email at sightings@ocean.org, or by calling us at 1-866-I SAW ONE).  We do not require real-time sightings, so pilots can just make a quick note while they are flying and then report their sightings at their convenience.

I have a few commercial companies involved (Nootka Air, Sunshine Coast Air, Atelo River Air, Inland Air), and am sending the guides to both the Nanaimo and Victoria Flying Club.  We are mostly targeting float planes, as they fly low enough to be able to spot cetaceans easily.  Please let me know if you have any ideas of who to contact or if you would be able to help get some pilots involved.

Warm regards,

Jessica Torode
Coordinator, BC Cetacean Sightings Network

Quesnel Skyfest / Airshow Cancelled Due To Fires

NEWS RELEASE – July 13, 2017
Quesnel SkyFest Society

The Quesnel SkyFest Society is deeply concerned with the current wildfire situation throughout the province... and in particular the Cariboo Region. Our thoughts are with all the families directly and indirectly impacted by this catastrophic and historic event. The Quesnel Airport has now been designated a fire support base by the Provincial Forest Service and government. This status is officially put in place for a minimum of 30 days which directly overlaps the Quesnel Airshow holiday long weekend event. This airport designation and level of fire attack activity will render it all but impossible to conduct an airshow simultaneously with fire suppression activities. Therefore, after careful consideration of all the circumstances, and in consultation with the City of Quesnel, the Quesnel SkyFest Society will be cancelling the Quesnel Airshow for the 2017 season.

The society is reviewing and considering all options whether the show will be postponed to 2018 and or other possibilities. We will provide this information in a further news release as soon as we are able.
This decision is a heavy one to make at this point in time, given the thousands of volunteer hours already put into making this year’s show one of the biggest and best thus far. We were planning many new activities in light of the Canada 150 Celebrations that have been ongoing throughout the country this summer. A great number of volunteers have been directly or indirectly impacted by the current wildfire situation and yet, have continued to work tirelessly toward hosting yet another successful event. The directors of the Society wish to extend our heartfelt thanks for their commitment and wish everyone the best in the face of these current challenges. We hope that the spectator crowd, sponsors, performers, and all those impacted by this decision will exercise compassion and understanding at this time.
We realize cancellation of this year’s event will be a disappointment to some but know that a great number of people planning to attend, working, and or volunteering at this event will have their focus on the safety of their families and properties. The Quesnel SkyFest Society and the City of Quesnel feel this is the responsible thing to do at this time and will update everyone once new plans have been finalized.

Sincerely,
Jerry van Halderen
Quesnel SkyFest Society President

Letter Form Magnes (COPA) Insurance Re: BC Fires

As individuals and communities in British Columbia battle intensive wildfires our thoughts and hopes continue to be for the safety of those affected as well as for all emergency personnel responding to this crisis.

In the interim we recognize that a number of current insureds may be affected by the threat of wildfire. In order to support our insureds in this time of crisis we are pleased to extend the following temporary
Emergency Policy Benefit for all current COPA GOLD and SILVER VIP insureds with physical damage coverage on their aircraft:

WILDFIRE PROTECTION COVERAGE

If a British Columbia Regional District issues an “Evacuation Order” which encompasses the
airport where the aircraft is principally based, the Insurer will reimburse the Insured for a portion
of the costs incurred by them to protect the scheduled aircraft subject to the following:

1. The aircraft must be relocated to other facilities that are designated and used for the
parking and storage of aircraft and which are at least 100 nautical miles away and
not under an evacuation order.

2. The coverage applies only to aircraft listed in Item 10 of the Policy Declarations.
The Insurer’s portion of the costs shall not exceed $500 of the amount incurred by the Insured to
relocated the aircraft for any one occurrence and in the aggregate during the policy period. The
costs include the hiring of a pilot who meets the requires of the policy. The Insured’s costs must
be properly receipted, documented and submitted to the Insurer for reimbursement.
“Evacuation Order” means a valid order issued by the Regional District to evacuate a specified
area and so noted on the EmergencyInfoBC website (https://www.emergencyinfobc.gov.bc.ca/)

Current insureds who experience any claims may of course continue to contact us for prompt response totheir needs.

Finally, a number of airports may lie within areas threatened by wildfire. It is only prudent therefore that
we are issuing a moratorium on new physical damage coverage business for aircraft based at any airport
within located in the postal code areas of V0K (BC Interior) and V2G (Williams Lake), hereafter referred
to as the “affected area”. This moratorium also applies to the addition of new hull coverage to aircraft
located in the affected area currently insured for liability only.

We will continue to monitor the situation and update you on this stance frequently.

BCGA Scholarship & Bursary Selection Process

7/8/2017

Thank you to those members that nominated someone or nominated themselves for one of the three BCGA scholarships / bursaries and a special thanks to the generous donors that made these awards possible.

The application deadline for this year was June 30th and we received 12 excellent applications for the three awards. In an effort to be fully transparent the selection of winners will be handled impartially by three BCGA directors that will review the applications and vote on who the award recipients will be. As the person who handles the applications and association membership I (Ryan VH) will remain at arms length and will leave the selections to three of our trusted directors.

We anticipate the results will be announced in early July.

The break down of applications is as follows:
Erissa Yong BCGA Bursary  $1000 - 3
Sparky Imeson Memorial BCGA Bursary  $1000 - 5

Onkarbir Singh Toor Memorial BCGA Scholarship $1000 - 4

We would like to extend a special thanks to our generous donors, Erissa Yong  & Dr. Toor for graciously making these awards possible. Furthermore we would not be able to administer these awards without our strong relationship and the help of the BC Aviation Council.

Award recipients will be recognized at the BC Aviation Council's annual Silver Wings Awards Gala in October.
