Flight Training Now Available in Powell River

The Westview Flying Club in Powell River B.C. held a public open house last month to let the community know that flight training is again available. It has been more than twenty years since an instructor and training aircraft have been on the field. Sealand Aviation, based in Campbell River, is operating the satellite school from the clubhouse. The open house was a big success with forty attending and twelve signing up as potential students. Another ten took away information to consider.

The WFC also want all visiting pilots to know that they are always welcome to enjoy the clubhouse and all the amenities available. "It's a pilot's living room"

If you have any questions or would like more info about this or just about our club, please contact me at this email address or: Call/text 604 223-0494

Message From The BCGA

Kora Vanderlip is a BCGA member, pilot and very talented young film maker. Kora has entered into the Storyhive by Telus competition to secure funding for her project MORE THAN WINGS a documentary about general aviation in British Columbia.

Kora needs your votes to help secure the Storyhive grant to make her dream of a BC Aviation documentary a reality. In order to support this project all you have to do is clock on the image above, view the pitch video and cast your electronic vote. You can vote once per day for the duration of the contest.

We are very lucky that our aviation community is home to so many great people with so many amazing talents. Kora is just one example of someone who can help us show the rest of the world why aviation in BC is so special to us and your vote can help her do that.

About More Than Wings

More Than Wings is a short documentary series that explores the beauty and wonder of flight in BC through the eyes of pilots who believe in the true spirit of aviation.

Soaring on metal wings, exploring the far reaches of the open sky, pilots live with a love for flight that is core to their being. This documentary series will explore that passion, and the true spirit behind the world of aviation.  The pilot episode will act as a portal into the community of aviation in BC, exploring the landscape as we fly across the province, seeking stories that inspire the passion to fly. This road will ultimately lead to Kelowna BC, for the launch of Give Hope Wings, a 20’000 mile flight circumnavigating central and south America to raise funds for Hope Air, a national charity that arranges free flights for Canadians in need of health care far from home. This event sets off the series, with the spirit of aviation as an anchor for every story told.

To help make this project happen, we are pitching for a 10K grant from Telus Storyhive, as a part of this year’s web series edition.

Storyhive is a community-powered funding program for emerging content creators in BC and Alberta.

The outcome depends largely on public voting, so we need the support and help of others to make this project a reality.

Voting goes from September 18th to September 23rd.  You can cast a vote every day with one simple click, just follow the link below to the project page.

Kelowna Puts The Flying In Flying Club With Grumman Tiger!

The Kelowna Flying Club (KFC) is pleased to announce that its first aircraft, a Grumman
AA5B Tiger, has just arrived at Kelowna International Airport . It will be on display at the
KFC clubhouse, 6135 Airport Way, from 5:00 pm on Tuesday 5 th September.
Press and other visitors are welcome to come help celebrate this milestone in
the Club’s evolution.

Club President Dave McElroy said he’s delighted the organisation has made this acquisition.
He expects it will lead to an increase in club members beyond the current 92.
“People join flying clubs to fly, and we had not been in a position to provide an aircraft
for their use until now,” he said. “There is great enthusiasm in the club about this aircraft.
It’s been financed by members, and others, who’ve loaned the club money to make the
purchase. And eighteen members have already signed onto the Flying Program and paid
up for 12 hours of flying over the next year. We expect this number to quickly grow to
twenty-five, which we’ve set as the maximum number of Flying Members for one
aircraft.”

The Grumman Tiger will be flown by club members who hold private pilot licenses and
are keen to fly but do not want to make a larger financial outlay to purchase an aircraft
themselves. The Flying Program will be managed by Club Member Jim Hannibal and
overseen by the Flying Program Committee, chaired by Chad Gartly.
The 1979 Grumman Tiger is arriving this week from Oshawa Airport. C-GVXY is a four
seat, single-engine aircraft powered by a 180 Horsepower Lycoming O-360 engine.
Cruise speed is just under 140 knots (250 km/hr) and the aircraft’s range is about 500 nm
(900 km).

The current Kelowna Flying Club has been in existence since 1984 and occupies a
building near the north end of YLW. The KFC is also known as COPA Flight 36; it acts
as the local presence of The Canadian Owners and Pilots Association. COPA is the
national voice of General Aviation, with more than 16,000 members from coast to coast.
The KFC is active in the community and each year sponsors the COPA for Kids Event
which flies more than 150 youngsters between the ages of seven and seventeen in a single
day using members’ aircraft.

This year the KFC also hosted the COPA Annual Convention, Trade Show and AGM. In
late June, more than 150 aircraft, 400 delegates and 700 members of the public descended
onto YLW to attend this signal event – the largest in COPA’s 80 year history.

In mid-September, the Kelowna Flying Club will launch a much improved, fresh, new website which will showcase the many benefits available to pilots and all other aviation enthusiasts in the Central Okanagan and beyond. www.kelownaflyingclub.com
