2020 BCGA Scholarship Winners Announced

9/4/2020

The BCGA is thrilled to announce the results of the 2020 scholarship competition. This was the fourth year of BCGA scholarships and we received 21 applications for the two available awards. All of the applications were very compelling and this year was by far the most competitive. A panel of six BCGA directors came to a consensus on this year's recipients.

Many factors came together to allow us (The BC General Aviation Association) to offer these scholarships.

1. Generous contributions by Erissa Yong & Dr. Harshbir Toor.
2. A strong and productive partnership with our affiliate organization The BC Aviation Council.

This year's awards are very special and in some ways unique in that afer the application deadline we lost BCGA Scholarship founding donor Erissa Yong in an aircraft accident. In her memory we have renamed her bursary the Erissa Yong Memorial Bursary.

If you would like more information on how to help continue the legacy of her bursary please CLICK HERE.

We wish to thank all those that applied for the awards and encourage those that did not apply and those that were not chosen this year to submit an application for the 2021 awards.

A member of from its inception in 2015, Erissa Yong-Wilson was a passionate and generous supporter of the British Columbia General Aviation Association. Her energy, ideas, goals, values and humour are woven through the fabric of the organization. Her influence will be felt for many years to come.
Hard work and business savvy provided Erissa the means to pursue her own journey to flight and to many other adventures. Always grateful for the life she lived so fully, Erissa felt that It was her responsibility, and her reward, to give back, to help others learn and progress in aviation, and in life. She acted on this belief often and in many ways, from giving support and encouragement in her own forthright style, to lending her airplane, mentoring, teaching, and in countless other acts of kindness, usually without fanfare or recognition.

In 2017 she personally established and funded an annual BCGA scholarship intended to further the aviation goals of a deserving student in pursuit of flight or aircraft maintenance training .

Since her sudden passing July 27, 2020 many people touched by Erissa’s boundless enthusiasm and zest for life have expressed a desire to honour her memory by contributing to a scholarship in her name. As a board of directors, we have carefully considered several options to facilitate this, staying true to her original intent and vision.

To that end, the Erissa Yong-Wilson BCGA Bursary will become the Erissa Yong-Wilson BCGA Memorial Bursary and will continue in the same form as she created it. A goal of $10,000 has been set which would carry the scholarship on until at least 2025. If donations were to exceed that amount the award will continue indefinitely, as long as funds are available.

Contribution Instructions
We invite anyone who would like to donate to the scholarship fund in Erissa’s honour to forward their  donation by electronic funds transfer to  info@bcaviation.ca (please put “Yong” in the comments)

or by cheque to:

BC General Aviation Association

(Please Note: We appreciate your support but will refrain from thanking or recognizing each individual supporter unless it is requested.)
