In 2018 a group of pilots located in California, Nevada and Utah called The Flying Cowboys began a campaign called #HeavierOut. The idea was to leave remote areas heavier than they arrived by hauling out any garbage that they came across in the backcountry. Inspired by The Flying Cowboys, the BCGA introduced the #HeavierOutBC campaign to British Columbia.

For the past year we ran the #HeavierOutBC contest. The rules were simple and the only tools you needed were a few spare garbage bags in your flight bag.  Pilots flying to a remote areas, airstrips, beachs or gravel bars that found any garbage, trash or material that shouldn't be there simply had to bag it up, fly it out and dispose of it properly.

The one year contest generated about a dozen entries. BC Aviators did their part to help clean up the BC backcountry and the majority of the effort seemed to be focussed on Vargas Island just north of Tofino. Thanks to a generous donor we are proud to award the following rewards to pilots that spent their time and avgas to do help keep BC beautiful!

Prizes

First Prize: $300 Avgas Voucher -  Rick Johnston
Second Prize: $200 Avgas Voucher - John Litherland
Third Prize: $100 BCGA Store Credit - Burce Nicmans

Thank you to all the pilots that took part, we will look at repeating the contest in the coming year!
